Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #2 by Alitha Martinez, Emilio López, Mark Morales, Michael Conrad, L.L. McKinney, Becky Cloonan, Jen Bartel

adventurous emotional sad medium-paced

3.0

The first half of this issue is reasonably pessimistic, as Diana must face the end of the world as we know it as per the future. She also witnesses Clark Kent sacrificing himself for the sake of the universe. At the end, Diana is lonely and must make one last necessary sacrifice for the good of the universe. We then transition over to Nubia obtaining her powers and gaining the mantle of Wonder Woman with the help of the African goddess, Oshun. I appreciated that Nubia's origins were given the same mythological weight as Diana's with the Greek/Roman gods. The comic ends with a message of hope for the future, despite the sad beginning. I think this exploration of the future was interesting, albeit atmospheric and at times a bit confusing. However, to an extent I believe that was purposeful.
