Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
5.0
We all knew I loved this story going in. I am convinced you can teach all of Christianity from it. It's an applied catechesis and a loving hagiography. Victor Hugo is ridiculous. He's ridiculous, and pompous, and distracted, and demanding. He can't just tell you that two soldiers met on the battlefield, he has to tell you the entire history of the Napoleonic wars. I hated that but I'm better off for being led along those random historical paths. He created characters you fall in love with: the marble lover of liberty, the politically confused and purehearted student, the street urchin who is the salvation of his country, the jail-raised spy trying to make sense out of virtue outside law, the generous bishop, the robber with the heart of gold. Redemption is our primary metaphor and Les Mis is one big long exploration of it. I've enjoyed every moment of it, and I'm so excited that I accomplished this goal of mine so early in the year. Thanks for everything, Victor.
