The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power by Shoshana Zuboff
3.75
The thesis of this book was good; that capitalism is taking over the future of technology and that private data is being mined for monetary reasons. The places where the book falls are in its length, solution, and comparisons. The author tends to repeat herself numerous times in an attempt to drive a point but instead lengthens the book way too far. There are sections that are so dense you lose track of her point. Her solution, that the issue isn’t capitalism but this kind of capitalism ignores all the evidence that she brought up. Finally, Zuboff makes too many comparisons of the overtaking of digital freedom to the actual violent genocides and torture of peoples. While the ceasing of the digital future is instrumental to human development, it cannot be compared to the pain and suffering felt by those in violated and oppressed classes. Overall, Zuboff’s book made a good argument with strong research, despite its weak solution and rambling nature.
