Together We Will Go by J. Michael Straczynski
4.0
Hmm, excellent read, highly entertaining, funny, and thought provoking. Of course there were many of the same themes as from Babylon 5, like reasons and doing things for the right reasons, and moments of beauty were moments of perfect beauty. But there was also a lot about decision making and the differences between emotion based decision-making versus logical decision making and the right to make your own decisions with your life. There was a lot about happiness, but what I didn't really see was much about meaning. Everyone seems to assume that the purpose were the point of life is to be happy, but sometimes that's just not possible. And it's not the point or, in my opinion mere happiness shouldn't be the point, because it's a fleeting feeling, that you always end up chasing. Particularly given the fact that leaving something behind that could act as a tool for others to build on is a much more involving purpose than me your happiness. I'm surprised that I didn't see service, purpose, and community of service as one of the themes here, given his development of the Anla'Shok, also known as the Rangers, in Babylon 5.
Also, I saw no references to Man's Search for Meaning, or Survivor literature where trauma and Holocaust survivors did a lot of probing into reasons to continue living that had nothing to do with happiness.
