An enthralling fantasy novel that captivates with its plot and stunning world-building. Set on the mysterious island of Lightlark, which appears once every 100 years, the story follows Isla Crown as she participates in the deadly Centennial game. The stakes are high: rulers of six cursed realms compete for the chance to break their curses.
Aster's writing shines with vivid descriptions and a richly imagined world that pulls you into its magical, dangerous, and treacherous landscape. Isla, the protagonist, is a well-crafted character whose journey is filled with tension, surprises, and emotional depth. As she navigates alliances, betrayals, and the complexities of her own powers, we are treated to a story brimming with twists and turns.
The reveal about Celeste is particularly notable, as it comes out of nowhere and changes the trajectory of the story in a thrilling way. Aster masterfully blindsided me with this twist.
Lightlark is a strong start to what promises to be an exciting series. Aster has proven herself to be a talented storyteller, and I can't wait to see where she takes this story next.
