Cold Pursuit by Nancy Mehl

This story had lots of heart-pumping action interspersed with some everyday life moments. I appreciated the inclusion of River’s Mom’s Alzheimer’s.
The story dropped nuggets of what is to come in the remainder of the series with family hurts, health issues, and the big case from their FBI past. It left on a great cliffhanger and I can’t wait for book 2 in 2024! I’ve enjoyed many novels by this author.
This is the second book I’ve read with synesthesia but I wish it was clear that it isn’t a neurological disease that makes a person harmful. I do understand that synesthesia, combined with serious mental health disorder like schizophrenia, it would be tremendously difficult and far more complex. From what I have learned about it, those with synesthesia live quite normal lives. Some even view it as an extra blessing.
The situation (I’m being vague as not to include a big spoiler) with River’s faith growth was odd for me. While I believe God can work through even the most bizarre circumstances, it just felt strange to me. I would have preferred it happened after that situation when things were less…… heightened. It was so far from a moment of clarity. I would have found it more natural if it happened afterward. Perhaps it was too similar to her past situation and that didn’t lead to any change at that time?
I really like the main characters and the Mom. I’ll definitely be reading the rest of this series. It’s pulse-pounding for sure!
