Heaven Official's Blessing: Tian Guan Ci Fu (Novel) Vol. 5 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu

3.0

Welcome to another episode of "I want to get cancelled by the TGCF fandom"!

Before I begin my review I want to thank Pei Ming for carrying this entire volume on his back. Thank you for your service!

But seriously, there was simultaniously not much going on but we also got A LOT of background information. I totally see why people might not enjoy this volume. It definitely felt a bit like a filler episode. I personally enjoyed this volume much more than the previous one and it's because it was less about Hualian and more about the side characters.

But on the the things I enjoyed it. I liked the inclusion of all the side characters and the background information we got. I also felt like the structure was definitely better and not as messy as the previous volumes. Definitely more balanced.

So, on the things I might get cancelled for. It pains me to say this but I just don't like Hualian as characters and I am glad whenever they act individually. I am still annoyed by HC's flippant attitude towards everyone but XL and XL just going along with it without a care in the world. In general I was quite disappointed how underdeveloped his character is. He is a static character with no character development, is way too overpowered and basically a plot device for infodumping. If we didn't have HC we wouldn't know shit because 80% of the information comes from his Wikipedia brain. While I enjoyed it that we got more information, the way it was presented to us wasn't done well.

What really irks me is the fact that so many interactions are repetitive. Every mystery that happens is resolved exactly the same way. Mystery -> everyone is struggling -> HC doesn't do shit even though he could -> XL asks for help -> HC saves the day by using his overpowered abilities OR someone miraculously comes in and saves the day which HC obviously knew. There is absolutely no tension. I never feared once for these characters, because I know that when HC is there everything will turn out fine. The fact that Xie Lian seems to be useless (even though he could manage just fine alone) continues in this volume. I know it's supposed to be romantic that HC doesn't want XL to get hurt and that's why he is doing everything in his power to shield him, but it makes XL's character almost obsolete. It gets to a point where it's not romantic anymore, it's just annoying. Additionally, while I enjoyed the first two umbrella scenes, we REALLY don't need more of them. That scene happened like four times already. It's getting repetitive.

Overall, this whole series could have been shortened to 4-5 books.
