Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
5.0
Yep, loved it. No surprise there.
Sanderson has done it again by developing a unique, fascinating world and creating deep, believable characters in this YA sci-fi novel.
The story follows Spensa, a teenaged girl determined to become a pilot like her father and prove to the world she's not the coward everyone assumes her to be. She has a great character arc throughout the book, in which she is forced to reevaluate her presumptions of what true bravery is.
I like that the action scenes don't always rely on "magic," but instead are focused on actual skills a fighter pilot might use (within the abilities and constraints of this alternate world, of course). There are a few moments, specifically toward the end, where I felt forced to suspend disbelief a bit. But, I am willing to overlook those in appreciation of the rest of the story (and hope my questions are answered in the next book of the series!)
