The Usual Rules by Joyce Maynard

This is supposedly a "young adult" book but it'd definitely be appropriate for adults too. It was really sad (of course it is about 9/11) but it was very thought provoking.
Love Walked in by Marisa de los Santos

At first I thought this was just fluffy "chick-lit". The beginning bugged me (with all the comparisons to movies), but the book got more serious as you went a long and you felt gripped.
Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Michael French, Tracy Kidder
4.0
Dr. Farmer really bugged me in the first half of the book (he seemed pretentious). But he's done so much good in the world. It was interesting to take a peek into his life and Kidder does a really good job of making Farmer come alive in the pages.
The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

This was so gripping and interesting, but the last chapter of the book was gratuitous sex and literally ruined the otherwise great book.
Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader by Anne Fadiman

I loved her essays on reading, mostly because I love to read and could relate to them so well.
