published omegaverse only slaps when ali slayzelwood writes it i fear :(
after the main characters slept together the entire plot just went wonky and the relationship wasn't built up enough emotionally for me.
also this being the omegaverse modern day IN A HOSPITAL was so wacky, and the plot felt cartoonish at time because of this setting.

this was supposed to be a retelling of the hebrew story of lilith, the first woman and adam’s first wife who was kicked out of eden for disobedience. lilith is a very interesting figure in mythology to me, as though she is painted as quite evil the reasons for her getting kicked out of eden was a lack of subservience to men.
this book tries capture that but from what i got through it fails.
i was led to believe the writing would be like that of madeline miller or something along that line but instead it was just very simple and hit you over the head. the metaphors of feminism are done so obviously it makes me cringe, along with constant reminders that what makes a woman is the womb inside her. lilith constantly talks about this and i just don’t understand that view point? considering that lilith was kicked out of eden because she didn’t obey adam, and one of adam’s wishes was to have children with her? very weird, not feminist, and made me roll my eyes. here’s a surprise! women are more than their wombs! you’re so surprised aren’t you??
the voice of lilith is very distinct, i’ll give it that, but it was not a voice i found compelling and wanted to follow. lilith seemed so bratty, for a lack of a better word, and not in the way of a figure who will come to be known as a she demon. she didn’t slay, she killed my spirit💀 she constantly thinks her way of thinking is the only way, and even has some icky dialogue about eve, who does not have to same drive/traits as her. lilith is so morally gray, and reading up on her she is so fucking cool, but that book did not capture it at all. i understand i only read 16%, but lilith’s voice and ideas about women and their place in the world was already how it would be at the end! the narrator was awesome but as i kept listening the voice of lilith grated on me. again!! SO MUCH potential!! this is lilith! mother of demons! she could’ve mothered so hard and been so morally gray, and gritty and cool, but i didn’t see that happening so i just had to dip.
i also hated how cartoonishly evil the men are in the story. yahweh (god) is outlandishly evil and a dick, and while i think that version of god is correct, it was done with all the grace of a scheming supervillain who has a lair. could’ve been done much better considering the fact that this is a DEITY and thus could have many sides but felt like his character was dumbed down. adam is a buffoon who is also outlandishly evil. now don’t get me wrong, adam is an asshole, but the way he was written made so cartoonishly stupid i half expected to get up to some tom and jerry aspects. men can be evil, but part of what makes them so scary is that some hide it very well. guiding figures like yahweh pretend to care for your wellbeing while not giving a single shit about you and men like adam will love you while oppressing you at the same time! but instead what could’ve been commentary about how men treat women (THIS IS A FEMINIST BOOK) these men in lilith’s life are so surface level evil that i don’t care about the final conflict lilith will have with yahweh because i know she’s going to win because this he is so cartoonishly evil and goonish that she will probably do some woman magic that only she can do because she has a womb and he doesn’t that will defeat him, and boom, ta dah, end of story.
the topic of lilith’s sexuality was also done at such face value. another reason lilith is demonized is because of her open sexuality and the fact that she *gasp* sleeps with men and ENJOYS IT??? however in this book this sexuality is shown by her sleeping with men after five minutes of conversation, and falling into a romantic relationship with samael after one sentence. lilith and samael obviously have an important relationship in the mythos and so that would carry over here, but for something that is IMPORTANT to the plot, it is so shallow and surface value that again- i. don’t. care! ALSO WHY WAS A SAILOR SHE HOOKED UP WITH INTO HER TURNED INTO A SNAKE AND STILL SLEPT WITH HER IN SNAKE FORM???? maybe it comes back in later, but i don’t have no urge to continue this book.
this turned into much more of a rant than i was expecting, but overall i just wanted something MORE. lilith is such a compelling character in the mythos, and yet here (from what i read) she is surface value and the entire story against her is just as surface level. for a story about feminism, this just bonked you over and over the head for the one hour and thirty minutes i listened to, that i could not have fathomed eleven more hours. i’m tired of feminist themes being done so over handed in books when this is a timeless issue that should be captivating to read about! but if the extent of your feminism is that a womb is what makes you a woman and women need to think like you or else they are stupid, perhaps you aren’t such a feminist after all.
and if i have to read this author having lilith describe her cooch as a “dark wet cave/canal” one more time i will be killing my self.

the author dedicating this book to AO3 readers made me let out the most unladylike shriek
ofc this book is very similar to her other ones (except this time our male lead had blond hair!!) but i still eat it up. her books are always fun reads that make me feel things and her writing is really addicting and comforting. i am an ali hazelwood girlie!
