recommended to me by my mom :)

super compelling world, mostly compelling characters but seemed very incomplete. the magic had no explanation, it would just happen from out of nowhere which made it seem like kind of a cop out at times. like oh, you can just do that? okay but how and why and when did you get these powers that just kind of showed up conveniently to save you in that moment?

with all that being said it ended on a big cliffhanger and I am excited to read the next one

Unlikable character is sad. Poor thing. Woe is me. I could understand the hype a little bit towards the end, I suppose.

this book came to me at a time where i really needed to read about some kickass women rebuilding themselves from the ground up. we are all able to get as strong as we can be and we are all worthy of as much love as we will accept for ourselves. this is the best book in the series.

I knew exactly what was going to happen at the end around 3/4 of the way through, but I couldn’t stop grinning like a little kid and kicking my heels all the way until the predictable end. Absolutely a delight. I believe in love.

Sad to say that my LA socialite literary fairy godmother did not save my life with this one except for one short chapter at the end that definitely at least prolonged it a little. Even though it is partly autobiographical fiction (there’s a whole page about the Duchamp naked chess photograph for which Eve is very famous), the story is a bit hard to follow and the characters come and go a lot. I found myself, unfortunately, zoning out.  That’s okay, Eve Babitz can be my LA socialite literary fairy godmother in essays and stories alone.

I think it was a little too niche for me. The romance seemed rushed, the fantasy/fanfic world wasn’t really accessible for anyone other than fanfic writers. It was charming and poetic at times, but didn’t really flush together nicely for me.

I came in expecting to this be like Gone Girl-esque and I definitely over shot it with the expectations. Lots of cop outs in the writing, predictable, 50% of the components of the mystery weren’t solved at the end. A flop I fear…

This was a snooze fest.

and I am SO tired of Mrs. Maas’s “…” and “—“ and “*italics*” please stop telling me how to read your book. There is no flow to the writing, my train of thought is interrupted by an ellipses every 5 seconds, and the emphasis is so far from how people actually talk. It’s driving me nuts. I excused it in the first two books because i liked the story, but there’s not enough substance in this one for me.

If I didn’t know from friends that the 5th book is really good, I would have stopped reading at around the 350 page mark.
