Shadows of Perl by J. Elle
A Young Adult Fantasy filled with murder, broken hearts, vengeance, and a race to save magic from disappearing forever.
Book two continues to follow FMC Quell Marionne’s after her unexpected final Rite of Induction to House Marionne run by her grandmother she fled with one mission in mind; find her mother. Although she finally feels like she belongs and can use her magic, the type of magic she wields is toushana which is dark and people like her are hunted and killed. It was the reason why her mother fled from House Marionne when she was little. To protect Quell from the Dragun's they were constantly on the move. Unbeknownst to Quell, her grandmother has been holding secrets. Now that the truth was out that Quell's magic was toushana, she lost a young man she loved, and when Jordan found out she held dark magic, his hatred, and disgust were evident and broke her heart. Now she is being hunted again, but instead of running and hiding with her mother, she is on her own. She knows few people she can trust to aid her on her quest to find her mother until she discovers that everyone at her House Marionne who witnessed her defiant explosive act at the Rite, no one remembers what she did. Now that the stunt she played at the Rite has been washed away, she can move a bit more freely but must stay hidden from Jordan and the Dragun's. She is surprised when she travels to Chateau Soleil for the House of Perl and that the head of that house (Jordan's aunt) welcomes her and her dark magic. The more Quell looks into these magical houses, the more secrets start to be unveiled. Can she find her mother and finally live how she has always dreamed of, or be on the run forever? Who can she trust to help her?
MMC : The man Quell loves is Dragun Assassin Jordan Wexton, who is now promoted to what he has worked so hard for; Second-in-command of the Dragun brotherhood. Jordan's job, above all else, is to protect the source of all magic, the Sphere. He has been taught his whole life that the dark magic wielders should be destroyed because it's the use of their toushana is the cause of the breaking of the sphere. Now that he knows the young woman he fell in love with could be the biggest threat to the Sphere, he has to battle with his feelings of what he was taught as right and what he feels for Quell. As the Sphere continues to crack, a war is brewing among the Houses and Jordan has to face his fears. If he has to murder the woman he loves to save magic, will that also break his heart?
I bury my face in her hair and inhale, and it's like taking my first breath in a long time. She has darkness, but somehow she warms me like the sun
Book two is left on quite the brutal cliffhanger and I can't wait for book 3 to release to see what happens after the chaos. Although I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first (House of Marionne) I still liked it. There was more information about some of the houses and how this world worked also following other people and their connections to the storyline that were mentioned in book 1.
What to expect from this series:
Forbidden Dark Magic
Lovers to Enemies
Enemies to lovers
Family Secrets
Broken Hearts
Deception
Slowburn Romance
Morally gray Characters
Bromance
Corrupt Magical Politics

Regardless of the sappy, expected love story, I ate this up and loved every minute of it.
