Get ready for garden trowels that go missing! Stomach demons that could be constipation! I really enjoyed reading about the anxieties of the villagers and the evidence used in the trial.

This book was meticulously researched from court documents, but it would have been nice to see those sources more centred and discussed, as the documents are such a unique insight into a small community.

My favourites were App-arition and Spare Room.

There was a little too much exposition. At some point in each of the stories, someone would usually show up to tell you about how the ghost died, what their unfinished business was etc.

That being said, I really enjoyed the interleaved chapters about the history and future of ghost stories and JW’s own life, and the way the ideas in those chapters were used in the stories.

A classic outlaw adventure story.

I wasn’t familiar with the history of colonial Australia when I started it. I really enjoyed learning more about the Irish diaspora in the territory, and inequalities with the settler class after the end of transportation.
