Trust Exercise by Susan Choi

I get what this was trying to do, I just think it did it in way too roundabout a way. I hated the first half from Sarah’s POV (so much fifteen year old sex to get at…this message in the end? make it make sense) which made the switch to Karen’s POV so confusing. Had we started with Karen’s POV, I think I would’ve enjoyed (take that loosely based on the content of this) the book much more. I wish we’d gotten more conclusion to Karen’s POV though before switching to Claire’s POV. And Claire’s POV… why even give us it if it’s going to be so short? We got nothing but more rape and sexual assault and no conclusions !
I’m just left confused about certain characters’ identities and disgusted by the subject matter. I don’t feel like we got anything from it except that rape and sexual assault are bad, especially from adults in power against kids. Which we could’ve gotten to a lot more succinctly imo.

The White Guy Dies First by Terry J. Benton-Walker

Liked some, loved some, was meh on some. Found some new authors to check out which is my favorite part of an anthology. All creeped me out, which was the point of this collection.
Goddess of the River by Vaishnavi Patel
3.0
I liked this a lot, but it felt slightly longer than I would’ve liked and I got bored in the middle. Also, I couldn’t keep the side characters straight but that could ABSOLUTELY be a me being ignorant issue or an audiobook version issue.
A Short Walk Through a Wide World by Douglas Westerbeke

I didn’t dislike this by any means, but I was apathetic the entire (fairly long) book. I just couldn’t get myself to care about any of the characters, I was confused about the set up (who lets a 9 year old just…leave), and a few of the travels/interactions had me feeling a bit iffy.
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley
2.5
Unfortunately, this wasn’t for me. The plot confused me, I couldn’t keep most of the characters straight, and those that I could I didn’t particularly like. Also, maybe my least favorite type of ending.
A Magical Girl Retires by Park Seolyeon
4.0
I liked this a lot, I only wish there was more to it. I would’ve liked to learn more about the Magical Girls, had a little more plot, seen more of the relationship development (what a pleasant surprise the sapphicness of this was!), and even would’ve appreciated more forcefulnesss to the messages and themes.
she followed the moon back to herself by Amanda Lovelace
4.5
Amanda Lovelace’s works will always hit for me and this was no exception. I think it’s that Amanda has deep and important messages, but the fairytale and whimsicalness intertwined gives a sense of lightness and hope to even the darkest of themes. I feel like I could trust her with my innermost feelings because she’s trusted us with hers. Although I don’t know that anything’s gotten to the level of their very first *for me,* I loved the self discovery and building up of others that were reiterated throughout this collection. The aesthetic of this one was also great for me; I loved the lunar themes of the illustrations.
I read an advanced copy of this from Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley, but I’m excited to add the physical copy to my collection with all her other works on October 29th!
Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez
4.0
This was so good. It lulled a little for me in the middle, particularly Raquel’s POVs, and I wish Raquel would have learned about Anita earlier in the book. But overall, I really enjoyed this. The audiobook in particular was amazing and I highly recommend!
The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy

I want to have liked this more than I actually did. Raya was unbearable and Strick was so dull. I don’t believe they have any emotional connection, but I don’t care enough to really even complain.
Ghost Music by An Yu
3.5
I think I liked this, but I’m also left confused. I wish the mushrooms had been more important.
