Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley

It's a toss up between 2 quotes for my favorite:
“But I ask you, wouldn’t it be worse if I were perfect? My imperfections make me less mournable.”
and
“Sometimes while I’m here, I pretend I’m a whale, deep down, listening to the singing and dinging of my whale family.”
At first, I wasn’t sure how to take this book. I didn’t have any sort of idea what it was about before I started, and based on the first chapter or so, I thought it was going to be another read about a girl with an illness that’s going to die. And a boy. And then there were some supernatural teasers.
Oh, is it gonna go there?
It went there.
After recovering from my initial stumble over the arrival of thousands of birds and a dramatic ambulance scene, I was able to switch gears and appreciate this read.
Overall, I found the world created in this novel to be unique, interesting, and refreshing. It isn’t like anything I’ve ever read before. I think the author did an awesome job at building the world and characters, who were all quirky and dynamic. I hope there’s a sequel, because this is definitely a world I want to learn more about!
