This is the 2nd time I’m reading this to get ready for book 2 coming out in a couple weeks. I loved it just as much the second time around. Idk there is nothing super special about this book but I just find the chemistry between the main characters sooo charming. It’s the boss employee trope but make it mid evil. There are really dark themes but the book is still so lighthearted. I’m obsessed with the villain. There’s no spice in this but he’s still the hottest thing since a sizzling fajita platter at chilis. I reallyyyy hope book 2 doesn’t let me down!!

I’ve been trying to think why I just haven’t connected with this book, these characters and it’s coming down to  a couple things. This book felt like a half send in the wrong genre. I’d consider myself a dark romance lover so I’m no stranger to a obsessive possessive MMC but in a dark romance it’s more extreme and unrealistic in a good way(like he’d be the hhead of a mafia family or an actual stalker lol) so Eli’s character just felt a bit cringe in this more serious setting.

Don’t get me wrong this book had a few good touching moments and sentiments but mixed in with the absolutely truck load of smut they didn’t hit as hard. Usually if I’m wanting a truck load of smut I don’t also want touching sentiment. These are too different sort of books I like and this for some reason didn’t work for either catagory.

Ok lastly if you’re going to pick up another Hazelwood book, and you should, go for Bride or Love hypothesis. Those are 5 star reads and if you actually want a MMC to bring the controlling in bed obsessed over the FMC then let me know cause I have real dark romance recs more entertaining than this 😂

I think if I hadn’t read 100 other romantasies already I would have loved this a lot more. It’s all a bit over done. Trials, morally grey love interest, powerless FMC who makes up for it in wit. Same old same old. If you haven’t read a ton of this genre before though I would recommend as the writing is decent enough and easy to follow.

Man I’m dnfing at 50% ya’ll. This book is so hyped with soooo many good reviews but I could not get into it. The narration is a killer for me. The pacing was slow. The characters boring. The one positive is really exceptional word building. A sea of spores very cool. Idk this is just not for me.

I do not remember anything that happened in book 1… I’ll have to try and revisit this later. Just not in the mood

I wanted to love this as much as Butcher and Blackbird but it just didn’t live up to the hype for me! Not bad but not great like book 1.

Note for Mack: there is one eyeball scene but you could skip like pages and be fine
