The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne
Did not finish book. Stopped at 25%.
Did not finish book. Stopped at 25%.
The story is well written and fairly easy to read, but the first 25% seems to meander, slowly describing the lives of the three main characters, but without sewing in any seemingly relevant plot threads. Ultimately I don't find myself eager to get back into the book.

A book that delivers on what it says on the tin. It was a lovely heartwarming tale with enough mystery and questions at any time to keep me turning the page and saying "Just one more chapter".

A fantastic book 2. The already lovable characters continue to be engaging as a wonderful plot unfolds before them. The narration by Luke Daniels makes each character sound unique and expressive. The stakes rise appreciably from the first book without becoming absurd, and the world feels fairly well grounded. If pressed for a complaint it is that we didnt spend as much time with some of the characters from the first book i had come to love. All the questions i have feel like foreshadowing for the next installment and i am already itching for book 3.

High seas adventure and a beautiful writing style.
The book caught me early with a lovely hook, then took its time with world and character building. The early parts of the book were often a bit confusing due to all the new terms and description of the world, but didn't linger on any one for too long. By the 30-40% mark I found myself quite comfortable in this new world and enjoying it. The bits and pieces of the world coming together one at a time, forming a clearer and clearer picture pulled me through the pages.
The characters are fun and deep. While Joron is the PoV, I loved learning about the other characters as the story progressed, more than Joron himself for a good portion of the book.
The action was fun and engaging without being drawn out. I am quite excited to read the rest of this series.
