My year of rest and relaxation is exactly what it’s title says is about…. resting… and relaxing, but reading this gave me anything but that.
A critique of privilege, specifically white , WASP, beautiful privilege set in a time of being where being such was the ultimate beauty standard.
I get the critique and the satire of the book, I get that it’s supposed to be funny, I did laugh! at parts!
Ill be honest my only impression of this book beforehand was it’s extremely strong cult like following that had treated this book as their bible, a slightly niche yet at the same time conforming community that bonds over female aesthetics and the like.

What was interesting to me was knowing how this book critiques the white, thin, rich, pretty girl, the online community that continues to praise this book is exactly that description. Such observation does not really add to my like or dislike of the book but it is an interesting observation nevertheless. This book was …… weird.. to say the least, cool, quirky, sometimes funny given the right settings, but also nonsensical, hypocritical, and racist at times. All critiques I have can be traced back to the fact that this IS A SATIRE set in the late 90s-00s, in which the humor makes sense, but in the way people treat this book, I expected a more insightful and meaningful experience.

reading this again and honestly, i don’t care that it’s pretentious or ostentatious i find it endearing…. and i deeply enjoy annotating the piece

to me at least, so much of the conversations and narrations are profound but still lightheartedly enjoyable

5 stars! i don’t care !
