my friend was right, it does raise a bunch of moral issues

thoughts while reading

p40: this is the moment i was waiting for, the introduction scene
p71: as you should girl, order that cheesecake šŸ°
p103: parents šŸ˜‚
ā€œDid you hear that? They are paying her to sleep now.ā€
ā€œPraise the Lord. Sheā€™s found her dream career.ā€
but thatā€™s all well and good until she needs to actually do something

p134: i knew it. i knew something was sus about it only being for six months. plus iā€™ve seen the spoilers that say he dies at the end so iā€™ve just been trying to solve it
p147: girl no obviously they are not going to just stick him in a room with razors šŸ™„
p198: seriously. seriously. they struggled through all that mud for nothing. i have second hand annoyance
p213: gahhh that was a total out of pocket comeback
p223: yes! the birthday dinner scene, the other moment i was waiting for
p231: šŸ˜¬ sheesh i would shrivel if i witnessed that
p233: aww grandad šŸ„¹
p235: eww we donā€™t stan possessiveness šŸ˜– is bro seriously jealous of a disabled man? i know will is the named love interest but still, patrick doesnā€™t know that
p236: best present ever šŸ
p237: will knows exactly how to wind patrick up and i am here for it
p326: this is such a wholesome healing moment šŸ«‚
p341: sheeesh girl, you are wasted
p349: oop, these two really love their inappropriate comments
p372: and there it is. what weā€™ve known all along. that Will makes her feel seen, valued, like she could conquer the world if she put her mind to it. patrick does none of this anymore, and still expects to keep her
p414: gosh those three make a wonderful trio and they really love winding nathan up
p430: yeah i can see how that looks bad šŸ¤

i am so shook and need the next one immediately
read the whole thing in a day

thoughts while reading šŸ—”ļøāœØ

"Promise me you'll stay alive long enough to stab me in the back?"
I could make good on that promise.
kai & pae are both so hopelessly in love that they canā€™t kill their fathersā€™ murderers

He's coming for me.
And I won't hesitate again.
just you keep telling yourself that

It's dangerous, how much I think of her.
How much everything reminds me of her.

p58: it would just be an innocent bystander šŸ˜‚
p79: shadow. i like it šŸ„·
p81: aha i never thought about that! kaiā€™s basically powerless out here, getting a taste of paeā€™s life. i canā€™t even decide whether i want it to be her trying to rob him right now or not
p82:
abigail
! they made it!
p91: hehe this will be interesting
p92: oh! weā€™re hearing from kitt now
p94: damn that makes total sense that his father tried to force them together, but why?

I should follow her. I should follow her and take her by surprise I should be smart about this. Every bit of training screams at me to handle this delicately, deliberately.
But where's the fun in that?
I'll handle her as delicately as she did my father.
and what a killer line he comes out with

If she is Shadow, then I am Flame.
This girl is the very thing I can't seem to escape - can't seem to go anywhere without the remnants of her following. Where I am, she is.
Whether it's in the flesh or in the fragments of my mind.
And where there is a flame, there is always a shadow.
She is my inevitable.

'You promised to be my undoing. So, prove it. Prove it. Hate me enough to make me want you. Ruin me.ā€™
screaming anyone??

p105:
not the kiss we expected, but the kiss we needed.
and iā€™m peeved she still hasnā€™t got her dagger back yet

'I'd watch your tongue, Prince. Unless you'd like to swallow it.'

p109: iā€™m pretty proud of pae for that move actually
p127: are we getting the one bed trope?
p143: šŸ„ŗ poor babies
p148: kai is no longer a fool for her šŸ˜
p198: is calum a double agent
p218: šŸ¤ time for another one bed where they definitely will have to share
p221: i would not have a good poker face if a guy said this stuff to me irl
p225: yeah you just keep telling yourself that
p235: ava. is she kittā€™s mum? (you can tell i hadnā€™t read the family tree yet)
p310: woah woah woah WOAH
p355: yes kai is finally getting to see her scar
p365: heā€™s a fool for her again šŸ¤

'Oh, but you are my undoing. My deliverance. My downfall disguised as a deity. You are my ruin.ā€™

p367:
kaiā€™s letting her go
šŸ„ŗ
p383: kitt is 100% sentencing paedyn to death just like she feared
p385: THE Fā€¦

This will be the rest of my life. Forced to love her from a distance.
Mourn the loss of her each day.
She is the torture I may not survive.
She is my undoing.
She was supposed to be my forever.
But the beast doesn't get the beauty.

oak is so like both jude and cardan that itā€™s funny

thoughts while reading

p45: whatā€™s really coming through clear here is that oak has a massive crush on wren, and he is familiar enough with her to know when something is wrong
p54: girl what is it with elfhame royalty and ā€œcrawl to meā€
p121: oh. my. gosh. this boy! you can so tell heā€™s judeā€™s brother
p145: ooft wren really is strumming to her own tune
p157: girlie pop is so scared and determined not to give in to her feelings
p177: this promise might turn around to stab oak in the back if itā€™s someone they know
p241: oh shoot!! i totally forgot
it was the ghost who poisoned lithrope!
p247: what a queen response šŸ‘‘
p264: could madoc have commanded him to do it? he does know garrettā€™s true name
p282: ummā€¦confusion?
p301: i did have the tiniest suspicion that there was something going on involving
bex
p320: TF???
p329: i have to say this is a pretty bad situation. i do however have a feeling that the high rulers can fix it
p336: well that was pleasantly surprising šŸŖ½šŸ¦‹ itā€™s giving QON šŸ
p342: yeah dude she missed your big love declaration
p352: that last line has me screaming

quotes

"Any which way, it will make the moment she bites out your throat all the sweeter."
"She's bitten me before, you know. It wasn't so bad."

ā€œYou asked me what I wanted with you. But all that matters is that I do want you. And I have you.ā€
ā€œI thought that you believed that there could be no love where one person was bound. Isnā€™t that what you told Tiernan?ā€
ā€œYou need not love me.ā€
ā€œWhat if I did? If I do?ā€
ā€œWhat if? Do not play word games with me.ā€
ā€œYouā€™re right. Let me be plain. I doā€”ā€œ
ā€œNo. I need no protestations of your feelings. Love can be lost, and I am done with losing.ā€
ā€œYou want me. You can have me.ā€

"I never pretended to feelings that weren't real."
"Never? Would you really have endured my kiss if you didn't think you needed me on your quest?"
"I would have endured it, yes. I would endure it again right now."
"That's not fair."
"Surely you could tell I liked it. I even liked it when you bit me. I might have a few tiny scars yet from the points of your teeth."
"Don't be ridiculous."
"I so love being ridiculous."
"You cannot really expect me to believe you liked being bitten?"
"Didn't you mean for me to enjoy it a little?"

ā€œI hope he will give you half the delight heā€™s given me.ā€

"Come back to me.
I thought love was a fascination, or a desire to be around someone, or wanting to make them happy.
Until I met you, I didn't understand to feel loved, one has to feel known. I had never really loved because I hadn't bothered to know the other person. But I know you. And you have to come back to me, Wren, because no one gets us but us.
We are messes and we are messed up and I don't want to go through this world without the one person I can't hide from and who can't hide from me.
Come back.ā€

"I hate being unwell," he says.
"You're not sick. You are recovering from being stabbedā€”or rather, throwing yourself on a knife."
"You would have done the same for me.ā€
"I would not."
"Liar."

ā€œIā€™ll be outside, yelling at people.ā€
ā€œTry not to enjoy it too greatly.ā€

ā€œI recognised your game. Not at first, but long before Jude. She didnā€™t want to believe me, and I am never going to tire of crowing about being right. I knew what you were up to before she did.ā€

ā€œAnd if you decide you want to risk your life, perhaps you could also risk a little personal discomfort and let your family in on your plans."
"I will take that under advisement."

i love it. the plot, the language, the magic system, the underlying biblical threads. everything came together beautifully! i especially appreciate this book as a young scottish red-headed lassie. ruth is one of my top favourite bible stories, and i really enjoyed the gaelic twist

thoughts while reading

p17: sounds like caitrin is in a spot of trouble
p60: no cause tell me why this is pretty much the first meeting i had planned for one of my books
p99: slay callen šŸ’ŖšŸ»šŸ¤
p118: what a brave queen
p232: finally protective mum comes to the surface
p243: oh. what have we here? is this a deviation from the bible?
is athair actually the devil or are the cairlinen being lied to by their spirits?
iā€™d vote the latter option is more likely
p244: see there we go
p257: OF COURSE!! LADY ARDALA IS RAHAB!!!!
p277: NOT what i was expecting at all
p282: prediction:
callen does end up being the judge and he convicts her but takes on her punishment himself!
p285: oh God, i was not expecting this twist
p287: yeah i donā€™t think heā€™s gonna fall for it. even on the odd chance that he thinks itā€™s a dream, i bet heā€™s the type of dude that would never indulge his fantasies even in a dream
p313: i knew muireall would never go for it
p317: itā€™s about damn time! iā€™ve been waiting to find out what happened for 48 chapters!
p330: a kinsman redeemer
p340: it would have to be
her own freaking mother wouldnā€™t it

quotes

ā€œI think the stars are shining brighter to try and compete with you.ā€

ā€œAll I want, Caitā€¦ā€
ā€œYou want me to give up my magic? You want me to be useless?ā€
ā€œI want to love you.ā€
ā€œThen love me. Love me like this.ā€
ā€œI do. Thatā€™s why I donā€™t want to see you hurt. I want to see you healed.ā€
ā€œIf Iā€™m broken, then itā€™s beyond repair, Callen.ā€

ā€œI donā€™t pity you. Caitrin, I love you. I love you, every inch of you. There is nothing so ruined that it canā€™t be restored, and no one so wretched that they canā€™t be redeemed. Nothing will stop me from loving you.ā€

ā€œBeloved, you are worth more than all the stars in the sky and all the blood in my veins. Every drop. And it is only my love and my life that can free you.ā€

ā€œRaeburn women do not waste time on dafty woppers.ā€

For those still searching to be fully loved
there is nothing you need to do
except receive the free giftā€”
Love has a name;
His name is Jesus.

thoughts while reading

p14: oh aman is mattā€™s bestie. i was predicting him to be someone grandpa used to know/grandpa himself
p28: this is a sucky situation :( take aman out
p46: yes grandpa, stand up for aman
p100: this treatment is absolutely outrageous but sadly absolutely on par with what i know of uncivil middle eastern police šŸ˜”
p115: can people just have some human decency please!
p121: see there we go šŸ«¶šŸ»
p126: shadow is such a good girl, what a legend! but i really hope she doesnā€™t get blown up šŸ˜¬
p251: iā€™m guessing sergeant brodie is either dead, still in iran, or they got the address wrong
p261: what a legend, ā€˜singing in the the rainā€™
p265: you are kidding. iā€™d call their bluff
p280: aw šŸ„°

this book is all about the realities of a terrorist attack, and human instincts as they try to make it out alive. some are every man for themselves, some are too traumatised to notice anyone else, some try to help at first but run at trouble, some risk everything to help, and some sacrifice themselves. we all think weā€™ll be those last two examples and judge anyone who isnā€™t, until something actually happens to us. thatā€™s when we discover that human instincts and morality are pretty fickle and complicated things after all

thoughts while reading

p14: i am on tender hooks waiting to find out what the terrorist attack is gonna be. also iā€™m liking this formatting, itā€™s different
p46: i have a sad feeling that ellieā€™s parents might be dead, and possibly violetā€™s too. cause yeah they probably wouldnā€™t make fresh orphans talk in an inquest immediately, but we havenā€™t been told how much time has passed. anything couldā€™ve happened
p54: yeah no they donā€™t just float, you have to learn that too
p56: oooh new character, someone who can do something at last
p58: oh violetā€™s black. oh of course she is, i thought that from her last name, guess i just forgot since yesterday
p67: itā€™s sounding like peaches has some kind of issue with most of the teenagers she knows šŸ˜…
p82: please God let it not be a shooter that picks up the phone
p92: violet. ellie. joe. peaches. thatā€™s four. whoā€™s the fifth?
p109: i just hope the shooters arenā€™t anyone they know, that would be even worse
p117: wait maybe the fifth teenager died šŸ„ŗ
p139: oh iā€™d forgotten about moz for a second there
p149: the ominous language makes me think it wasnā€™t šŸ˜
p151: this definitely didnā€™t end well
p204: shit ellieā€™s dad definitely knows something we donā€™t
p207: flip sake. i know the purpose of this book is to highlight the reality and variety of human interactions during traumatic events, but i swear if we donā€™t find out why these little shits are doing thisā€”
p250: so
march
is definitely the fifth teen, question remains whether
he isnā€™t speaking at the inquest because heā€™s too angry and traumatised or because somehow they find a way to pick him off too
p262: poor violet always expected to know everything
p291:
MARCH IS OK HEā€™S OK HEā€™S OK THANK GODā€¦WHYā€™D YOU HAVE TO SCARE US LIKE THAT, ONLY ADDING HIS TESTIMONY RIGHT AT THE FLIPPING END
p298: oh my gosh imani šŸ˜
i understand why we never heard from march earlier now
šŸ˜
p311: viā€™s mum is a shining example of a mother's love and sacrifice
til the end. the ability to super humanly hang on long enough to ensure her child is safe

p335: i donā€™t even care anymore that
we never find out why
, iā€™m just so glad theyā€™re mostly ok

quotes

ā€˜We've lived this now. It's not some distant horror that happened to other people. We can never pretend that we're safe again. This can never not be real, and that's frightening. But I'm more frightened that I'll allow fear to keep me from living. I'm going to live. Not being safe is all the more reason. I don't think we should allow those people to take away one more life.ā€™

sadly i didnā€™t enjoy this as much as
The Folk of the Air, but it was still good. this book is from wrenā€™s perspective, so that was a change to get used to. i was bored for the first 45%, but to be fair i didnā€™t really fully get into The Cruel Prince until the last 40% of it either, so i guess i can forgive the rough start. not a writing issue but a me issue was that oak was literally a child in The Folk of the Air, so to read him as a love interest this time was strange and ever so slightly cringey, the same way i feel with younger siblings and their partners

thoughts while reading

p120: well this is fairly reminiscent isnā€™t it
p235: i knew it! thatā€™s so cute šŸ„ŗ
p241: donā€™t take her hairpin šŸ˜”
p248: AHHHHH THATā€™S WHAT JUDE SAID TOO
p292: damn that was actually pretty hot
p342: wait a damn minute
wrenā€™s heart must be mellithā€™s!!!
p350: this is absolutely insane

i love the mystery of it all and iā€™m desperate to read The Brothers Hawthorne now

thoughts while reading

p19: oh dear
p104: itā€™s chess!
p125: he sounds a lot like tobias hawthorne
p133: NIV! why didnā€™t i catch that?!
p136: ok. who the heck is this?? is this bro tryna tell us
heā€™s tobiasā€™ other son
or something??
p158: xanderā€™s giving off joel vibes
p191: oh gosh what is eve doing there?
p252: if this isnā€™t the sweetest thing jameson has ever said šŸ„¹
p253: uh huh, well i did wonder
p291: surely notā€¦
p323: hmm, well this is a tricky situation
p329: iā€™m desperately trying to work out what even is the best outcome now that
tobyā€™s thrown the first match
p340: sheā€™s not gonna win is she
p358: yep thatā€™s pretty much what i expected

quotes

"Yes, you do. And it doesn't even matter, because I'm not putting on a show here, Heiress. I'm not playing at being overprotective or pretending that, for once in my life, I want to do the right thing. I love you. I would die to protect you. I would make you hate me to keep you safe because damn it, Averyā€”some things are too precious to gamble. This is who I want to be, for you."

"You make me see myself as a person who's capable of anything. I would jump out of a plane with you, snowboard down the side of a volcano with you, bet everything that I have on youā€”on us, against the world. You don't get to run off and take risks and expect me to stay behind in a gilded cage of your making. That isn't who you are, and it's not what I want. You, have always made me bold. You're the one who pushes me out of my comfort zone. You don't get to box me back in now."
