3.5
I'm being generous with my .5
Look, it's immensely "readable". I finished it super quickly because of thay quality. And, it's also so much better than the borefest that was book 2. But Mal is there a lot and he's not better than he was before. And Alina didn't become lovable, relatable or just enjoyable either.
The trilogy is very flawed. If you've already read book 2, going through this one is easier, so you should if only for the sake of finality. But a bit like Twilight, even though I was turning the pages and reading it in a very short amount of time, and enjoying the process of turning the pages, I cannot say it's good exactly.
They did Nikolai dirty. I understand how he becomes suddenly more multidimensional, but he was already a strongly build character.
Also, I feel like the underground first part of the book might have been the strongest part. Like, stuff is happening left and right, stakes are high and mood is low after that but I didn't FEEL it like I felt the silent anger and helplessness towards the Aparat. I was more invest in Alina and the Grisha's fate vs the Apart and the Priestguard than against whatever else came up afterward.
But I guess now I'm sailing to a better series.

It was good, but it's hard for me to not compare it to other memoirs I've read in 2023, which were life changing.
I also think when I got to the Steven era and onward, I lost interest a little.

I mean, I cannot give it more than 3.5 since the whole empathy part of Yi City in actual novel is a masterpiece. It pales a little in comparison.

The first season is a 5, the 2nd season is a 2, the ending is reminescent of bad kdrama ending with a time jump, very unsatisfactory. The first season is worth it, but my advise is to end it there and just forget there's a season 2.
