I was rather disappointed by this last volume. While Nesta's development was welcome, the centrality given to her grief, even though she wasn't particularly close to her father, seemed excessive. The author certainly wished to propose far-reaching feminist themes (finding one's voice other than in marriage, healing from the wounds and violence of a patriarchal society, developing a form of sisterhood), but this introspection is largely spoiled by the sexual intrigue with Cassian, badly written monster smut (repeating over and over again that Cassian has a huge cock or that he devours Nesta like a buffet betrays Maas's lack of imagination). The political and magical intrigue that marked volume 3 completely fades into the background, as if volume 4 were mainly a pretext for fanfiction exploiting the ACOTAR universe for sexy, uninspired scenes.
We hope that the next volume will put the political intrigue and narrative back at the heart of the novel, extending the feminist thread of the Walkyries!

The mood and pace of this gothic thriller are gripping and beautifully written, as is the gradual unveiling of the mystery surrounding Lenora, with the help of interlocking chapters. However, the multiple twists at the end, some of which are designed to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, are clearly far-fetched and a little disappointing. Putting aside the last 20 pages, which are not up to the rest of the book due to the almost vaudevillian twists, the novel is well worth reading!
