A fun premise but it's time to accept that Shonen just isn't for me.

Ostensibly a response to and critique of Hillbilly Elegy and its fans, it stands on its own merits as an insightful and educational look at the history and nuance of the oft-stereotyped Appalachian region.

A range of good to great poems, strengthened by Limón's ability to tell insightful vignettes in verse that flow like prose; accessible without ever sacrificing or flaunting craft.

Great art, bonkers story; like a disaster movie on acid.

A picture book for adults; an old-fashioned parable for modern times; a subtle piece of art from a couple of masters.

I don't know why I have fond memories of Night Force, but I'm thinking I never actually read it and have just been projecting my love for Wolfman and Colan onto it because this was bad even by early-80s standards. Unappealing characters; sloppy artwork, far from Colan's best; and wordy-Wolfman at his 80s worst. A hot mess that has NOT aged well. 😬

I was never into TMNT at any point, never read the comics and only saw a couple of the movies (including the most recent one, which was fun), so I had no real expectations beyond wondering if the hype was deserved. It was! Is!
