In Bloom by Paul Tremblay

Environmental horror about come blooming algae. Started off a little slow with some difficult jargon but settled in nicely to a story about the history of algae in Cape Cod.
It also reads like Final Destination but that might be because I’m also watching Final Destination.

Great boogeyman story set in the woods of Michigan.
A missing girl, a grieving sister, and a folklore with a possible kernel of truth.
Quick read with a satisfying conclusion.

Great quick read for spooky season! Marianne and Willy suffered a miscarriage so they move into a new house in the country for a change of scenery and to finish the grieving process.
They end up meeting the locals and getting tied up in traditions found there.
TW: pregnancy loss

I don’t have any idea what happened in this book.
Someone is on drugs. It might be the MC, it might be me, I don’t know, it’s gotta be someone though.
That being said it was an interesting and confusing rollercoaster.

This was a cute read. I hate whenever a character is too perfect though and Alex is definitely too perfect. We get it, he’s hot, rich, always saves the day. Finnnneeee.
And of course Ava has all the problems and needs to be saved.
Other than that it read a little slow for me and the spice wasn’t too often or too spicy.
TW: menta health, panic attacks, lies, murder

Chapter 4 is the best, most useful chapter in this book.
Unfortunately much of the writing, particularly in chapter 3, delves into an argument of “do it this way because I’m right and it’s so common sense that if you disagree you’re wrong.”
The rest is ok. The ideas are solid for the most part. It just needs to be written with more real world examples and practicality. That being said, I’ve been working on this topic for years and am thinking about people just learning about it and how they could struggle.

This story is about a brother sister duo at a carnival that comes to town on Kayleigh’s birthday.
Immediately Kayleigh is freaked out by the Klowns and it turns out there’s more wrong with them than she thinks.
Kayleigh and Andy work hard to save the carnival and the people in it. It’s a cute story with a fun premise.

This one fell flat for me.
It’s about the main character and his siblings on a camping trip to St. Ignace. Things go awry when they get lost in the woods.
There’s spirits and a magical sword but it all seems very choppy and lacks depth considering all the Native American stories that could have inspired a story like this.
I’ve enjoyed the others in the series more.

This one was a bear to get through. Of course the MC is insufferable; he’s a pedophile. But the way he just rambles on like ruining a life is no big deal because he’s so great and smart and European is a bore.
This was very slow moving but I do appreciate reading it after seeing it referenced in My Dark Vanessa.
