If it wasn't for how short the book was, I don't think I would've been able to finish it. Parts of the book seemed to be recreations of the movie "Knives Out", just with them being sorcerers instead of ordinary rich people. The characters were very flat, except Callum, who we didn't get introduced to early enough to understand the development from mean jock to friend fully. The final twist was surprising, but I wish it had a meatier ending, and didn't just turn into a three-page monologue.
Flaws of characters a main focus? It's complicated

Loved the book up until the last 20-ish pages. I feel that if it had a more open-ended ending, it would have been better. But as it was, it had a very this-is-the-definite-end kind of ending, which I'm not a fan of. Instead of taking his time with the plot, and really developing the villains and conflict, Horowitz seemed to rush to make this the last Alex Rider book.I didn't like the ending of Freddy dying, because it felt too out-of-nowhere. It didn't seem to have any purpose, it didn't motivate Alex or cause him to freak out like it did with Tom, so it felt like it was simply added in to make the reader upset. I'm personally not a fan of death for no reason, and it felt like a very weak ending.
THIS BOOK MADE ME LOVE READING AGAIN!! I had just finished some longer series, like Cruel Prince, Shatter Me, and Flame in the Mist, and I was having trouble finding books to keep me engaged. But when I found this book, it was great for getting me back into reading. The only other book I would say that matches this one is Six of Crows. If you like any dark fantasy books, and don't like a lot of spice, this book is perfect for you! Definitely a longer read but 100% worth it for all the plot twists.
The book is a great Little Mermaid retelling with a dark twist. It's nice as a casual read, but can get dull at points. The comedy is mostly good, but some of the fight scenes get hard to follow.
