The Guncle Abroad by Steven Rowley

I loved the first book - it had been such an unexpectedly deep exploration of grief and family, beyond the fluffy book I had been expecting. This book was a little more mean and superficial than the first book (that was a lot of money and wealth that I couldn't relate to) and that left me a little disappointed. I still liked the kids a lot, although, I too missed Grant's lisp and overall, I thought Rowley captured teenage angst well. I loved the Guncle love lessons and I thought that the ending was sweet.

My last criticism would be around the dismissal of Maisie's feelings because she was on her period; the way that Patrick bolted and stammered when she was menstruating was annoying - he's a 50 year old man, I don't care if he's gay, menstruation is NORMAL.

Having Meryl Streep narrate this was an excellent choice, as it came alive with her voice.

I enjoyed the first part of the story - it was obvious that this was written from the author's experience and the part about the writer's room and exploring grief was great. But I couldn't figure out why the main characters like each other besides their connection to the tragedy. The smut was plentiful and hot, so that definitely was in its favor!
