Though somewhat dense at times due to invented technical jargon, the story was fun and engaging nonetheless. The main character was strong, and many of the supporting characters were we-developed, keeping the book from being too one-note. Above all, the concept was truly original to me, making the reading experience worthy of my time.

A horrifying story but fast-paced and compelling. This is yet another period of history that needs to become well-known, if only to prevent repeating. Ruta Sepetys always tells these stories well.

Table for Two by Amor Towles

Though not for everyone, I love Towles’s languid verbose style, and this collection of stories highlights that style beautifully. I was also pleasantly surprised by the novella of Eve, from “Rules of Civility.” I didn’t like the character at all in the first book, and it didn’t really get a good sense of her in that novel. But her story here is terrific and gives the character some heft. Her story alone makes this collection a winner.
