Chang Geng's pupils contracted. He reached into the heavy armor to pull Gu Yun down by the neck and, throwing all caution to the wind, pressed a kiss to those wind-chapped lips.
(page 31)

This time was different from the farewell kiss they shared at the capital ramparts; it lacked the intensity of desperation. Gu Yun felt as though a corner of his heart had collapsed, offering up the softest spot in his chest. From now on, this person is mine.
(page 157)

"Zixi, just now, I...I honestly thought I was dreaming."
"In all my life, I've never had such a wonderful dream, " he said with a hint of self-mockery. His mouth crooked up in a stiff smile. "If only I never woke up. "
(page 256)

Catching sight of Chang Geng in the distance, Gu Yun waved him over.  "Chang Geng, come here, I'll play a little something for you".
An earnest attempt to play was what Chang Geng most feared. He strode over and wrapped his arms around Gu Yun, pulling him off his perch atop the railing. He leaned close to his ear and murmured, "Save your mouth for other things."
(page 319)

While everyone was screaming themselves hoarse fighting with the great condor, Chang Geng had stealthy licked Gu Yun's neck.
Beneath the din, Chang Geng breathed into his ear, "Dying for love right here wouldn't be so bad, would it?"
(page 342)

Their rizz is unparalleled and I love that they take turns. This volume has so much character development for both of them. I also love a good third-wheel and Shen Yi is a perfect example.

I never found either character to be particularly likeable or compelling, but I was still very surprised that it ended up being a story about two miserable people who were terrible together.
I've never seen someone cry as much as Nangong Jingnu.
Qi Yan also spent most of her time
murdering perfectly innocent people and barely got any revenge at all.

I enjoy how easy the politics were to follow, it made it very easy to tell that Nangong Jingnu
should not have become emperor, wow she was so bad at it and did not grow as a character at all.

I'm hoping this isn't the peak of baihe.

I read the translation by Northwest Flower, and it's very good, but I do highly recommend getting the Seven Seas officially licensed translation to support the author.

I think when the series is fully released in English by Seven Seas then I will likely rate nearly every book 5 stars. The story and characters are absolutely phenomenal, but I did struggle to understand some of the different political factions. I'm really looking forward to a reread.

There were times I threw my head back and laughed, and there were times when I was so emotionally devastated that I needed to stop reading to sob into my hands.

The extras were also top-tier, exactly what I wanted. The truth or dare: steampunk edition extras were hilarious.

Chang Geng shot Gu Yun a glance. "I have to prepare a dowry so I can marry a general."
page 372

Chang Geng rizz in this novel goes pretty hard. I'm not sure how Gu Yun hasn't completely fallen yet.

This book was very plot dense and slowed down a lot, but it was all still quite interesting. I really enjoy the dialogue between our main leads.

I didn't want to put this down.

Violet gold was said so many times, I'm beginning to think it would've been a better name for this book.

Most of the time I forget about the "steampunk" elements since they just exist so we can have airships and "heavy infantry"
(except they're actually in mecha suits performing frighteningly accurate martial prowess)

The book starts off with a bang, we get into a
mecha
battle, people get
turned to paste
, there's a guy
cannibalizing
folks in the streets.

Naturally there's a reveal
of secret identity's with Chang Geng being the fourth prince, and Shen Shiliu being Marshal Gu Yun of the Black Iron Army.

Gu Shiliu being actually "blind" (he needs glasses) and deaf was as surprising as the magical medicine that allows him to temporarily rid himself of these disabilities.

Chang Geng is giving "Mo Ran" from 2ha at times and I am here for it. The darkness is in that boy. I'm still not confident that Chang Geng was ever
poisoned
, he kind of seems like he just has anxiety/ptsd.

4.0 because
they got married to women.
Yes I know it's historically accurate, but I'm still upset.

Okay this was really good and I cried a lot. It was both funny and heartbreaking. I would of course prefer they were more open with their relationship and not referred to as "Sworn brothers", but we got a lot of clearly gay moments. For it not being
a happy ending, I thought it was very sweet they ended up buried together.

The extras was
a modern AU where they're surfer bros
and I hated that so I skipped through them.

Key moments for me:

Shallan and Adolin
solving the mystery of who murdered Sadeas (Adolin killed him the end of book 2)

Shallan going absolutely crazy
and manifesting two better personalities (Veil & Radiant)

Dalinar's backstory was sufficiently emotionally devastating
(shshsh being Evi, the fire, the alcoholism etc)

Kaladin getting emotional when
Elhokar died
was what made me stop reading for 15 months. I just didn't want to deal with the whining, but it actually wasn't that bad. He just focused on the next task.

Adolin and Pattern talking was funny af.

*Kaladin, glowing on the boat with Shallan staring in awe*
Adolin sighed and made his way up onto the high deck. Seemed they weren't forbidden here any longer. He joined Pattern, who had come up another set of steps, and was humming happily to himself.
"Kind of hard to compete with that, " Adolin noted.
"Mmm," Pattern said.
"You know, I've never really felt like this before? It's not just Kaladin, it's all of this. And what's happening to us. " He shook his head. "We are certainly an odd bunch. "
"Yes. Seven people. Odd." page 1070

"We'll be fine. " Adolin glanced at Pattern, Syl, and the spren of his sword
(Maya)
. "Right, guys?"
"Mmmm," Pattern said. "I do not like being stabbed."
"Wise words, friend. Wise words. " page 1156

Szeth and Nightblood (sword-nimi) were the funniest dynamic right up until Lift, Szeth and Nightblood had multiple conversations. Szeth deciding to be a Knight Radiant and follow Dalinar was comical.

"No," Szeth said. "I am not good at being a person. It is... a failing of mine. " page 1207

Teft becoming a knight Radiant was nice, I would've liked that to be more of a focus. Lopen at the very end saying the words casually was funny af, but also why did we nearly end the book with a joke? I'll miss seeing Moash since I'm not continuing the series.

I'm very glad that the end of the book had
Xie Lian, Hua Cheng, Mu Qing and Feng Xing (and I guess the state preceptor, Mei Nianqing) battling Jun Wu together. Xie Lian's little inner circle warms my heart.

He gazed at Xie Lian. "If your dream is to save the common people, then my dream is only you. "

Relying on his memory, Xie Lian asked with a trembling voice, "But...you won't...be able to rest in peace...like this...?"

"I pray to never rest in peace," Hua Cheng replied.
page 116

Hua Cheng exploding into butterflies will always make me cry, but reading was a lot easier this time knowing what was coming.

After much hesitation, he decided to be blunt. "Why is the evil qi...internal? It's...it's coming from inside your body. "
page 159

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the extras this time around. I was under the impression they weren't very good when I read them in 2021, but they're so sweet. While tgcf is definitely not smutty, the book is still very clear on how exactly Hualian's relationship progresses.
