People of Abandoned Character by Clare Whitfield
3.0
As one may expect with Jack the Ripper based books, warning: this gets intense. This has trigger warnings for almost anything that comes to your mind. That being said, many people know of the gruesome murders of Jack the Ripper so you can expect that to show up in here. Since I was familiar with this already, what truly bothered me was the traumatic experiences our main character endured as a child. Now she has to deal with her abusive husband who is giving her Ripper vibes.
I didn’t not like this, but I didn’t love it. I read this via audiobook and I’d probably have struggled more if I read it physically since it just kind of feels too drawn out. The twist at the end to the Ripper mystery, I’m not on board with personally. Guess it’s something else to think about sure…just not believing it. Also not in love with the gay rep displayed in here. I don’t personally believe it was done too well.
Would I suggest reading this? If you enjoy researching Jack the Ripper and hearing theories on the case, it’s worth a shot to pick up this book. Just don’t get your hopes too high. The ending may work for you and it may not.
