Hurricane Child by Kacen Callender

Highly suggest listening to this! The narrator, Krystel Roche is phenomenal! One thing I thought was phrased inappropriately was the mention of suicide. I don’t think any child in middle grade should know their parent attempted this.

I read this for a reading prompt for one of the many challenges I am a part of

This was such a unique way of telling one’s life story. I really liked listening to the audiobook. It’s narrated by Billie and her parents!! Her book is a picture book but I didn’t even need to see it while listening to this. Let your imagination go wild. Billie sounds like such a cute person who just loves to bring joy to others and have fun. I actually wish more celebrities did memoirs or autobiographies like this. It feels much more personal and fun. I learned a lot and it makes me more interested in Billie and therefore her music.

I honestly completely lost most of the plot after the fourth POV. Having more than 4 POVs makes it so hard for me to keep track of who is who and stay engaged with the story. Oddly enough, I still listened to the entire audiobook because I loved the narrator and I got the gist of what was going on but nothing particular.

Highly recommend maybe reading this in tandem with the audio. I definitely needed the physical copy to follow more closely with the story. The way the author described the POVs in this book is that they are the community as a whole. This is a part of a trilogy and the next two books will have different POVs if I’m not mistaken.

Sadly, this didn’t interest me enough to want to continue with the trilogy but I did love the author’s writing and would definitely pick up other work by him. He has a debut sci-fi novel called The Lesson that I will definitely read one of these days.

This surprised me so much!!! I wasn’t convinced that this would be a book I ended up loving until the twistsss. They were good and original and I loved the ending. It wasn’t your typical thriller ending Alexis is a bad bitch 💁🏼‍♀️ she overcame her demons and I love her!! This was so refreshing and can’t wait to read more from this author!!!

If you loved the show Desperate Housewives, you’ll love this!! ⚠️ Warning ⚠️ Sam, the main character’s husband, is completely unlikeable. If you don’t think you can deal with that, don’t read this book

This was a mixed bag for me. I liked some essays and others I didn’t. I liked some parts of essays and then didn’t like other parts of them. I didn’t keep track of the essays either which would have been helpful. My review would be alot more concise.

I’m not sure if listening to the audiobook was the best idea for me.. it was good but the author narrated it and he sounded so rigid. His voice wasn’t as fluid and lyrical and the prose he wrote his essays in. I still on the fences as to whether I even like reading prose.. I guess it really depends on the author. I still definitely want to read his debut, Johnny Appleseed, and think he is a talented writer. As an indigiqueer person, his voice is a unique and refreshing one to hear.

This book was 10 years in the making and it shows!! Everyone should read this!! This historical horror novel is outstanding. The fact that it’s based on a real place and people makes it much more daunting and harrowing. I loved this so much. Tananarive is clearly a talented author and it is such a pleasure reading her work. I can’t wait to read more of it. Hello new auto-buy author!!

It’s better if you go into this book blind and just enjoy the informative and dark ride this book takes you on through a place that really existed once.

This book is remarkable. What a comprehensive and beginner-friendly overview of the history of the war in Palestine. I can’t wait to get a physical copy and annotate this. The audiobook was incredible and I highly recommend it! It’s important to learn more about the world around you and what our gov’t participates in. The good, bad and the downright evil.

This started so slowly I lost interest in this about 30% in. It didn’t pick up until the last 25% where everything starts to come together. I think this book was way too long. I would have liked this a lot more if it was more concise. My favorite twist (and favorite part honestly) was the one about the Wolf Queen.

I can see why this book came so highly recommended. I loved the world-building, the characters, the chosen one with a twist trope, found family and the magic system especially.

One major issue I had with this was the pacing. I had to reread the first page like three times because I couldn’t really understand where we were starting. I thought the first chapter was a really odd way to open the book. It made more sense as the book went along but it was just strange that I was confused by the first page. I almost softly dnfed this. Then also it would go really fast in parts with alot of action and then slow way way way down in between to the point where I was like are we going to get to the action at some point 🤣 The ending felt completely rushed even though there was a really good twist right before the ending that I did not see coming.

Overall, a really good book that just suffered from bad pacing. I also don’t feel invested enough in the characters to continue to the next book. I think this would have been fine as a standalone novel.

This really is about what a Hollywood writer will do to succeed in a world that wants you dead. The protagonist goes on a really fascinating journey seeing his written villians come to life to kill him. A very original concept and one I enjoyed very much. It was quite graphic so please keep that in mind. This is not a cozy horror book lol. The point this book lost me was the how. How were the evil characters in his scripts real? Well.. read and find out. The details confused me but I still really liked this.

I waited to listen to the audiobook because so many famous writers were cast to be in it but I honestly couldn’t tell you who was who and it sounded like only one or two different voices. So it was alittle disappointing that the audiobook wasn’t as big of a production as I thought it would be. Still enjoyable
