Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin

✨After finishing the whole series I decided to give it stars cause I love it so so much and I feel sort of empty without it lol✨
4.5 ✨
I am OBSESSED, I mean witch and witch hunter! What could be better for an enemies to lovers plotline!?
I LOVEEEEE Lou, she reminds me a bit of Alexandra from The Shadows Between Us but I like her more given that, you know, she has powers and all.
I thought this was YA but given the spicey scene I guess not, either it was labelled YA by the same person that thought ACOTAR was YA or the whole thing is messed up but oh well...
I loved it so much I stayed up until 3 am to finish it and I'm already 100 pages into the second book.

Well fucking hell, I loved it!
I am really pleased that I didn't guess who had committed the crime and I seriously can't wait for the series, I like the cast but I wish they actually looked like teenagers but oh well
I'm also really pleased with the fact that I went into this book thinking I was about to read a murder mystery but I also got a good girl/bad boy romance lol, I need the sequel rn!

Maurice by E.M. Forster

The movie is one of my all-time favourites and I have to say, book to movie adaptations used to be so much better. The movie is quite literally the same as the book (as it should be). Even the whole vibe is IMMACULATE.
This is a very interesting book given that all characters have multiple layers to themselves, for example, Maurice who is our main character, can be quite lovable but he can also have old fashioned and slightly fascist views given his high status in society at the time.
I also hold this book and movie so close to my heart as it is an ICONIC queer classic, which was groundbreaking for its time. Forster’s novel was published posthumously in 1971. The British author was himself a closeted gay man; he passed away in 1970, shortly after the legalisation of homosexuality in the UK. Forster did not seek to publish it during his lifetime, due to public and legal attitudes to same-sex love. Forster was determined that his novel should have a happy ending but also feared that this would make the book liable to prosecution while male homosexuality remained illegal in the UK.
The movie, among LGBT audiences, is a vital work of gay cinema, notably produced by gay men during the reactionary period of the AIDS crisis.
If you have been wanting to get into classics I would definitely recommend this gem to you as the plot is gripping, the characters complex and the writing is beautiful but easy to comprehend.
My final point is that if a book that was written in 1914 and a movie that was released in 1987 can have a happy ending for the gays, WHY THE HELL ARE WE STILL SUFFERING IN 2021!

The book as a whole, I'm rating 3.25 ✨ and for it as a romance I'm rating it 4.25 ✨. By this, I mean that if you are looking for a great romance book, you'll love this one.
I was just expecting a bit, idk, more I guess. This is one of the most popular books on booktok, bookstagram and booktwt so ofc I had really high hopes for it but it just wasn't my cup of tea.
That doesn´t mean I didn't enjoy it, I absolutely loved Alex and Henry and I understand why so many people love them and their story.
I won't say this is an overhyped book just because I didn't love it. I'm more of a reader who enjoys romance as a subplot and not the main thing so, again, if your thing is romance with great queer rep, this is the book for you.

The moment I started this book I was drawn into the story, I loved the writing and the plot was really interesting since the beginning. I adored the spooky feel and the narration was brilliant so I don’t really know what happened or what the book lacked but it definitely lacks something.
Maybe it’s the instant love trope that makes me not love it or the fact that I know that a future love interest is someone extremely questionable that makes this a meh execution of a brilliant idea.
❗️SPOILER WARNING ❗️
TW: Abusive relationships
Sooo I know that W is going to be the main love interest in the future and I’m not comfortable with that. Especially with the fact that he is such a horrible person (his trauma doesn’t excuse his behavior)
-he has harmed people and children to satisfy his curious
-he basically sexual assaulted Juliette by touching her and kissing her without her permission and with her obvious reluctance (yes she admits she kinda liked it but he didn’t know that and still did it)
I am aware that W acted that way because he was supposedly being *monitored* but I personally think that this excuse is a very trashy and convenient one to make W a good person making him love interest material.
I might continue this series but it’s very probable that I won’t because of W and because there are lots of better stuff out there that deserve more attention.
