Flames of Courage by Faye Fite

The second installment in The Terebinth Tree Chronicles! Can I just say I love Jayel? It can be hard to make your main character come alive to the reader in the space of a short story, but Hannah Heath aced it with this one! I felt Jayel's anger, bitterness, her longing to make a difference in the world and to be recognized as an individual with worth by those around her. I'm looking forward to reading more about her in the future. Also, the main theme of the story really resounded with me. "Always move forward."
The desert was a cool setting once again. (As a side note, I think this would be a good book to read in the winter, because all the references to heat will warm you up!) It was fun to get a bit more world building and see things from a new perspective. I can't wait to take another visit to that world soon!

An interesting read, for sure. I can't say I enjoyed it. When I go into a story that I know will be depressing, I need to be able to connect with the main character, but I couldn't do that with Misha. He seemed emotionally stunted, and at times, mentally unstable--both of which might be fitting due to his traumatic childhood. Still, it made it difficult to enjoy his point of view.
I'm giving Milkweed 3 stars because, even though it was heavy, I appreciate when a book really makes me think.
