The Life We Chose: William Big Billy D'Elia and the Last Secrets of America's Most Powerful Mafia Family by Matt Birkbeck

William “Big Billy” D’Elia and Russell Bufalino were arguably two of the most successful Mafia dons in history. D’Elia had no criminal record until 2006 and wasn’t even considered a blip on the radar by the numerous organized crime task forces who’s sole responsibility was tracking their every move. Bufalino and D’Elia accomplished this by sticking to one simple rule: lay low. Something many mobsters never could seem to master.

Birkbeck did an amazing job of making it feel like a genuine conversation. I loved hearing D’Elia talk about Frank Sheeran and Charles Brandt, especially after reading “I Heard You Paint Houses”. I’d be interested in reading the other 5 versions of Sheeran’s story. I also recently read “The Last Honest Man” by James Risen, which tells the life and work of Idaho Senator Frank Church. When reading books like this, It feels like putting a huge historic puzzle together. Learning each side of the story and seeing how it all shaped our nation as we know it.

Couldn’t put this one down. Funny, smart, gripping cross country thriller that had me from page one. Although I kinda guessed the ending and some of the big reveals before they happened, they were still really well done. I was collecting the clues along with Amber, which was really fun. I was attached to all the characters by the end, but I absolutely ADORE Dot. I would love a book just on Dot and her life as the Queen of Las Vegas. Would recommend to anyone who wants a fresh new take on the thriller genre!

I know there are deeper meanings to this book, but I enjoyed it as a quick, whimsical, Alice in wonderland tale. It was a nice, fast read!

This is my first Michael Kortya book and certainly not my last! I really loved the picture of the island that was painted, even though it was described as a depressing run down place. You could see through all the trauma, even Israel and Lyman appreciated the beauty of the islands nature. The bouncing back and forth between Israel and Lyman's point of view helped keep my attention. I loved getting little clues from the dialogue and making those connections for myself without everything being spelled out for me. Great read!

Super fun and informative. Perfect for aspiring astronomers, astronauts, and meddling kids! I mean, a series where Velma and the rest of the Scooby Doo gang teach you all the cool stuff about space? What's not to love?

Amazing!! I’ve been looking for a mystery with a real sense of adventure and this is it. I would say this is my favorite by Hallett, but I love MCOTAA for such different reasons.

The twist was incredible, I loved watching every layer be slowly peeled back. Incredible!!

I give it a 3.5! I definitely enjoyed The Mysterious Case of The Alperton Angels more, but just like MCOTAA, I tore through it in a day!

I love reading the transcripts and trying to solve it on my own. I was sucked in from the moment I started reading. It felt a little drawn out by the half way point, but I’m glad I pushed through. So so cool.
