The Vegetarian by Han Kang

Absurdly creepy. Not traditionally scary, but terrifying all the same. We're I to knock off a star (and I'm not going to) it would only be because the sentence-level craft felt, at times, a little staccato. I think this is just a problem I have with a lot of books in translation. It actually worked in the author's favor this time.
Lafayette in the Somewhat United States by Sarah Vowell

Listened to Vowell read this on Audible. She reads her own books and I think I prefer listening to her narrate because her tone and timing are delightful. She has a unique voice and it's perfectly suited. Her audiobooks also always include cameos by comedians and actors. This one included Nick Offerman playing George Washington. It just works.

Prior to this, I was aware of Lafayette's dedication and contribution the cause of American independence, but I don't think I fully appreciated how much we own to the French (occasional British arrogance and weather.) I do now.
