I was disappointed. I was expecting this book to be to Arthurian legend what The Magicians was to Hogwarts/Narnia. In general, it lacked humor or really anything new or unique.

I feel quite accomplished getting though this. It was long and took me a while.
While it is definitely a product of it's time, I definitely still enjoyed it and can see the value.

I was not aware this was an adaptation of The Great Gatsby when I started. It was a pleasant surprise. Just a fun romp through an era of New York city. I always love how Vo does not shy away from dealing with real issues the world would have been facing.

It was a fresh take on the concept of Sleeping Beauty. In a world of millions of fairytale retellings and the villain perspective takes. This was an interesting sideways interpretation.

I continue to love this series! I miss the moment when I found it and it was 10 books deep and I could just read on through.

I am going to have to eat some crow on this one. A friend that I'm in a book club with has been pushing for this book for a while now. I did not like the sound of it and we have disagreed on the more sci-fi end of what we like in the past. I caved, we picked it for book club, and I freaking loved it!
I would compare it to Project Hail Mary and MurderBot. Bob's humor and personality floating somewhere in between the two main narrators of these series. The science isn't too heavy to bog you down. It plays that game of making nerd references without that being the whole book (I'm looking at you Ready Player One). I will definitely be burning through this series in the very near future.
Also, I think this will be a really interesting book for a book club conversation. Lots of meaty debate topics (I won't get into them as they would be spoiler filled) in the philosophical and anthropological realms.
Two negatives first, very minor, the audiobook narrator does not have a good Homer Simpson impression. Second, the first book doesn't have a great ending. It definitely feels like a chapter end that needs the next book.

I want to like Le Guin. I really do. I see her value. I know what she did for women in sci-fi. I just don't like her writing style. This book was so slow. I get the build up. I get that the point is the character growth but I was just so bored. I'm not even sure anything actually happened.
