Quarter to Midnight by Karen Rose

It took me almost 2 years to finally sit down and read more than a few chapters of this book. While I did get sucked in pretty early on and liked the mystery plot, the romance didn't do anything for me at all. I also found some of the twists to be really convoluted and dramatic. I will continue the series since Karen Rose has mostly been a hit for me.

I knew I was going to enjoy this just by the title: The Dead Cat Tail Assassins! P. Djèlí Clark does a fantastic job at setting up and developing the world-building with intriguing details and total lack of infodumps. This was such an interesting universe and I loved how it built up on folklore and other stories to move the plot forward.

The characters were also very well written, though I wish we had seen a little more of a few of the side characters. Even so, our narrator had a strong voice and I liked going on this journey with her as she tried to figure out what was going on with herself and... herself.

The final resolution did lose me a little bit when the goddess figure came along, but I know this was due to the writing style attached to the dialogue. Still, the ending did answer some important questions about the characters and was satisfying when it came to the future of one particular bad dude :D

Some parts of this were interesting, but the ones that were not were in the majority. Also, they were all terrible people who did terrible things.

A little bit convoluted to start, but damn was it good. As usual, a love letter to the Slasher genre. I also did not expect for me ending to hit me so hard.

Not my favorite Kingfisher, but still a solid spooky read! I'm not familiar with the original story this was based on, but I very much enjoyed how Kingfisher introduced, developed, and described the White People here in the novel. It was an unsettling world and, through Mouse's perspective, an intriguing read all around. Also: I loved Bongo and Foxy!

Not only my favorite of the novellas, but also my favorite installment in the series so far! I loved how this not only expanded the world-building and the understanding we have of cytonics and their powers, but also how lovely Jorgen's character development was. There was also quite a bit of action throughout that was exciting and kept me engrossed!

Something about the writing and pace and romance was... off to me. It didn't quite hit the cozy spot I wanted. I also wasn't a big fan of the conflict presented. I did love the spells and magic and cozy community feelings, however! Also, Caz and Meep were my two favorites <3

The story jumped from POV to POV in some rather abrupt ways. The mystery was also very easy to predict.

A bit too slow for me. The mystery was interesting, though!
