That Summer Feeling by Bridget Morrissey

Did not finish book. Stopped at 50%.
i am honestly in a reading slump but i was excited for this book and for a good sapphic summer read for the first few hot days.
While the writing is easy to read and the premise is really inviting, i just couldn't find any will to keep reading it and only got halfway through it. Even though I absolutely support adults being silly and healing their inner child, these characters did feel way younger and the book could have easily been ya if it wasn't for the adults cast.
I did get to the point of the main character realising she has a crush on her cabin roommat  and her kind of realization or acceptanc  of being queer, idk if it was full on comphet or if she is bi or unlabeled (might have needed to continue reading to know), but in the few pages of her realisation the word "deciding" or in similar grammatical form were used in relation to on one side her "heterosexuality" and on the other hand other people' queerness which irked me a little

I don't really write reviews but this book is very conflicting to me. I rated it 4 stars simply for the vibe bc it was an easy read both as an ebook and as an audiobook, i personally flew through it rather fast and somehow it made me wanna continue and know more.

But technically and objectively, I'd rate it lower because it read like a fairytale or memoir of the name-bearer while i feel the premise and what happens in the book doesn't call for this style of narration. The protagonist honestly didn't feel developed enough and i wish she had been, during the danray arc i kept wishing for some steadfast character development considering the amount of time she spends at the temple. I think the different dynamics between the characters had great potential and could have been explored more, and the book overall read like it suits a younger audience than maybe intended, it is YA but even the part where the main character is aged up is written the same way with just some events added that make it a little darker.
It is a very descrptive book on the first half, dialogue is scarse in the first half of the books and i kind of wish it had been a little longer to flesh out some scenes and dynamics. I also think the book needed more editing to avoid some repetitions and small mistakes i noticed in my ebook version.

The audiobook actually did the same faiytale-ish narration with more tonal emphasis and I think it added even more to the book feeling more juvenile, more than the book on it's own.

I'm gonna read the second book and hope that it is more developed and fleshed out because the premise of this series is very interesting and has potential.
