The audio was a lot of fun. Lots of silly voices!

This really needed to be longer and better developed, at points I thought I'd missed pages. It's an interesting idea and what was there was enjoyable but the girls powers and friendship needed more development and I had no idea what was going on with the colonel or the snake guy.

This book could have been an essay. Once you read the introduction there's very little new information and it gets incredibly repetitive.

There are a couple of stories with some racist content. One with Native Americans and one with a Chinese person and an evil jade bracelet that made zero sense to me.
The rest of the collection is mainly characters I could imagine being in Anne of Green Gables getting overly freaked out by Casper level hauntings. I really enjoyed it, it was spooky but wholesome!

I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane when it was first released 10 years ago. I have tickets for the stage show and remembered very little about it, it definitely wasn't one of my favourites of Gaiman's work. So I thought I should have a reread before the show, especially since I'd bought this nice illustrated second copy and never read it.
.
Firstly, Elise Hurst's illustrations are just perfect. They really added to the text and somehow captured that fuzzy darkness of a bad memory. Plus, the book is very black and white. Good and bad. Light and shadow. The art style is too.
.
I enjoyed the book a lot more than I remember doing the first time around. I think it's less about plot and more about the helpless feeling of being a child. I liked the Hempstocks and the way they played the role of the fates. It's not clear if any of it really happened or it's just a bookish, mythology loving, child's way of dealing with trauma.
.
I'm looking forward to seeing how it works on stage.
