The Girls of Slender Means by Muriel Spark

Very interesting. The contrast between what is said out loud (a few amorous encounters here and there) and what is implied (by Joanna's poetry, by the "slit window" and such) makes reading this book an almost threatening experience, if you will. A keeper for my permanent collection!

Godawful self-published dreck. Save your time.

Maybe it's because I read this immediately after Coetzee's Foe, but this book seemed to say the same stuff as Foe, only it took four times as long and was harder to slog through. Auster's sentences are like chores, except less rewarding.

On the other hand, I feel like I must have missed something big if so many other people like it..

Wonderful piece of work! Completely unbelievable as memoir but it doesn't matter; Grozni tells a rollicking story and you don't really care if it's true.

I can't believe I used the word "rollicking"...
