Mister Owita's Guide to Gardening: How I Learned the Unexpected Joy of a Green Thumb and an Open Heart by Carol Wall
4.0
I'll start by saying that I truly loved reading this book. The author writes in a captivating, yet easy-to-read style. Honestly, I hated to put it down, and I seldom did.
Partway through, however, I began to feel that the author was a bit overly obsessed with how she addressed Mr. Owita. I got it the first time she said it, but it came up a few more times. Aside from that, which was only mildly annoying, I was a bit surprised at the incorrect use of the word loan when the word lend would have been the correct choice. A petty observation, perhaps, but I couldn't help but wonder how things like that get by proofreaders and editors and publishers.
That said, this book is a must-own for me. And if you're a friend of mine who enjoys books as much as I do, don't be surprised to find one gift-wrapped at your door some day. It's a book that brings me to tears, both happy and sad, and causes me to think about its meaning for hours and days after I've finished. I would love to hear that this author is planning a sequel; perhaps, the story of Mr. Owita's children and wife in much more detail, too.
