I devoured this and found it to be a glorious read. Edina is a horrifically wonderful creation! First book I have read by this author but it certainly left me wanting more. Most excellent!

I wanted to hug Joanie. She was such a wee soul. There are happy, funny and sad parts all of which serve to endear the reader to the protagonist. The book resonated with me, in particular themes of being an outsider and achieving goals later in life. I'm really loving this writer at the moment.

I love new Scottish writers and this debut novel did not disappoint. Good, solid crime writing with likeable and well-drafted characters. Really hope to see more from this writer.
St. Agnes' Place by Jill Starling

A moving and accurate account of the effects of sexual exploitation on vulnerable young women. Trafficking is not just something that happens to people in far off places. It's a local issue for all of us. This book is well worth a read.
The Drowning of Arthur Braxton by Caroline Smailes

I had no idea what to expect from this novel but I really struggled to put it down. The story is compelling and often made me wonder what it must be like to live inside this writer's head. I recommend this book. I enjoyed it immensely and think I will probably read it again in the future. It's a gem.
Tony Hogan Bought Me an Ice Cream Float Before He Stole My Ma by Kerry Hudson

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The title rocks and the book doesn't disappoint. It's gritty and poignant with strong characters. I love that much of it is set in Scotland. I think this a bold, brave and brilliant debut and I look forward to reading more of this writer's work. Kicking myself that I didn't get to see her read at Polari!
A Guide to Becoming Distinctly Average by Amy Elliott-Smith

I identified with the novel so strongly that I have a feeling the author and I are long lost twins! It's a deceptively easy read which bravely addresses issues of mental ill health but it is also utterly hilarious in places. The author has a really friendly, engaging tone and her account of smoothie making had me howling with laughter. A great read. Highly recommend.
