I had this on my tbr as a Queer mystery but it’s more a horror/mystery crossover. I’m not easily creeped out by things I read, but this one was truly spooky. Might have waited to finish this in the morning rather than at night. I liked the characters but maybe the romance was a little rushed. Really looking forward to reading the next book.

I agree with all of the other reviews, this book is adorable! The characters felt so real as did their lives and struggles. A woman who knows how to sew her own clothes and the importance of feeling good in your clothes, was really nice.

I've been looking for a good Queer mystery for a while and I've definitely found it with this book! Love the premise of four aunties taking justice into their own hands. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but that’s fair as you really get to know the characters. The mystery was well done and not too predictable. I liked that it was not a murder they’re trying to solve but something else. As well as the discussion of why justice is hard to find in legal ways for some people. Plus the Queer, Trans and disabled representation in the book was great.
I do have to give a warning (which the author also does in the beginning of the book), the sexual assaults might not be on page, but some of the aftermath is, so be sure you’re able to handle that when you start the book.

For me the narrator did not fit well with the story at all. I might try again with a written version of the book.

This very much felt like the beginning of a series, just an introduction of the characters but not yet in depth. Expect two stand off ish gay detectives and Criminal Minds levels of gore.

I loved this book. I'm really into paranormal mysteries and this is one of the better ones I've read.
One of the things I'm always looking for in fantasy books is characters who have knowledge about the magical world they live in. To me that makes the story more interesting. This book had that, two professionals who have worked for the organisation for over a decade.
The Autistic representation was done well, the tiredness, the limit to the amount of background noice/people and the guilty internal voice.
I thought the romance was also believable and cute.

The characters were flawed but in an intentional way. It made them feel real. It helps that the amateur sleuth knew the community and the victim so well. It made for a well thought out mystery with a few suprising turns. The city of Lafayette was described in such a way that I felt like I was there. Really looking forward to the next book!

Really liked the sleuthing and the mystery plot. Plus the setting of the university and the Chinese-American cultural elements that were included in the story. The romantic subplots were however not for me.

I'm not in the mood for a 'boy goes to a magical school' story, even if Ursula K le Guin is the author.
