The Anxious Generation: How The Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness by Jonathan Haidt

3.5

Haidt has done a thorough job educating parents and the public on the dentrament of devices to our growing generation. He provides ample examples from a multitude of areas that many parents don’t think about when handing their kids a device. After all, what can be so bad? We’ve all survived.

However, the childhood landscape has changed significantly due to easy access technology. Kids today are more expected to know how to work an iPhone than how to ride a bike. Haidt warns about what the future might look like for us all if we continue not to prioritize the development of children over the comfort of a relaxed, technologically-preferred parenting strategy.

The reason why this is not 5-stars is because the entire work lacked intersectionality and the nuance involved. Most of the examples in the book leaned heavily into gender stereotypes. There were several times in the book where it felt as though the assumed reader was white and only white. Obviously, this is a massive oversight.
