For a book about magical books, I found this so unique while still grounded in some sense of stories that I’ve heard before.

The plot mostly centers around an eventual love triangle in which all the romances are super flimsy and one note (the second love interest isn’t even introduced until 70% in). The world is cool and what kept me reading but I can tell I’d just be pushing myself to finish and I don’t care about the next installment.

This was just fine. It felt like some of the elements could have been fleshed out a bit more and made amazing. I enjoyed the different perspectives we got as well as the setting but I don’t think this book will stand out in my memory over time.

I preferred this authors other series to this and don’t think it will stick in my mind long enough to continue when the next installment comes out.

After a lull in the series, I’m so glad the last few installments have been good again!

This is a retelling of the later half of the Beowulf myth but it’s heavily focused on the abuse of the main character and people being a little obtuse about the antagonists and trusting them so it did get to be a bit tedious.

I realized that I don’t remember much of book 1 and don’t care enough to reread that in order to continue
