It took awhile for me to get into this one. The first half is basically bad sex and Stockholm syndrome musings but some time in the last half a plot kicked in and I'm intrigued enough to see where this going with the next book. Auren definitely has some growing to do, I hope there's more of that in book 2. I'm also curious to get a bigger glimpse of this world. Hopefully with less 'saddles' being used goings-on.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed with this one. I really loved the first book and this sequel was one of my most anticipated releases. I originally started it pretty quickly after release and got about 80 pages in and ended up walking away from it for awhile. It wasn't capturing my full attention and I thought maybe it was just a mood reader thing and decided to come back another time when I was feeling it more. I finally made my way back and unfortunately that feeling never quite left me. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. The plot is interesting and was my main draw to the first book. Maybe because this one seemed more focused on sexual tension, I'd say that was definitely first and foremost. But I'm confident that wasn't all it was either as normally this wouldn’t be such a drag. Ultimately this ended up being just a 'meh' to me. I never really got super into it and that was a bummer to me after how awesome book one was. I'll likely still read the next one with hopes that it will reinvest me in the story.

This was imaginative and chilling in a very OTHER kind of way. Everything was very well done and it wonderfully sets you on edge and makes for a quick haunting little read.

This one was a bit of a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed the haunting element immensely. Monroe does a bang-up job with setting a chilly scene and invoking a deep sense of unsettle without a bunch of flash and bang. Often times a quiet hum you feel in your bones is more disburbing than something grusome in your face and I think she does this very well here. Also, the link between mothers and daughters and the lengths they will go to for each other was well established throughout generations.
While I did enjoy the sliding back and forth through time to get glimpses of each generation's struggle, at times it could feel a little muddled, most especially towards the end. At the conclusion I was still left with some kind of big lingering questions. Without being revealing of spoilers all I can say is I'm okay with some mystery being held by the end but one thing in particular I would have liked spelled out, and it felt more like a plot hole to me than mystery. I can think of a reason why it was so but that isn't necessarily my job and I didn't like that it wasn't addressed more plainly. Another unfortunate thing for me was I couldn’t really connect with any of the characters. None of them were all that likeable to me, which can fine if done right, but they all were equally unremarkable too in a lot of ways, the only exception to that being the curse that plagued them and their zest to be rid of it.
I received an arc of this book from Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley and this is my honest review.
