90% of this book is a retelling of the first book, but from Casteel's POV. Then the other 10% is "present" moments, still in Casteel's POV.
However, don't let that stop you from reading it. I was really hesitant at first because I thought it would get annoying that I was basically re-reading the first book. But, having those key moments retold by Casteel revealed a lot of important plot points.
And the last chapter?! OMFG!!!

holy shit! i typically hate when people say "the series really gets good by the third book" but my god, this was a phenomenal addition to this series.
There were so many great moments that I loved and ended up staying up late to finish it.

Overall; a great second book to this series in terms of plot, character relations, and new storylines.
However, I will admit that the first half of this book was very dry and hard to continue because it just felt like the story wasn't moving along.
But! in the flip side, there's a certain part about 50% through that the whole book regains its traction and it became hard to put down.
Unlike the first book where there were a lot of allusions and hints to what the "big plot twist" would be, this one didn't have as many and genuinely intrigued me.
The ending of this book was a FANTASTIC set up for the third & made me excited to read more.

The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
Did not finish book. Stopped at 14%.

I've outgrown YA fantasy. The main character was way too young for my liking & the world building was uninteresting for me.
This would be a good intro fantasy series for a younger reader, since the world is very simple and includes modern "reality" technology and settings.
