*seasonal re-read.

*re-read, even better than i remember it to be.

incongruous writing that somehow didn’t match the tone, and in combination with the plot and pacing i was thrown all over the place. but it was fine.

this book made a lot of choices. i enjoyed and tolerated around 70% of them but the rest of it was minor to moderate quibbles that stacked on top of each other to the point where it got too tall to ignore.

the dialogue at times, was too trite and corny, reading like old irish people doing therapy speak. the important plotlines are introduced as a means of conflict but are handwaved as soon as they became an impediment to the story, and several plotlines are left unaddressed and forgotten. 

most annoyingly of all, there was a moment this book tried to say something about feminism. the problem with that is, if you’re going to have your protagonist posit the story as women’s magic, it’s time for women to take back the tale, framing how horrible men can be to women, you have to actually follow up on that.  

the protagonist cannot undertake a single action in this book without being saved by a man. every single time, a man shows up to save her in some manner.

the only exception to this rule is when she is saved by a magic mirror a plot point so highly utilized yet so unexplored.

the only other woman in the house has a personality and plot role that, frankly amounts to vengeful woman / jealous hag. all the other women are there to die, or there to have their husbands die, or there to die and then have their husbands die, or there to have their husbands die and then get paired off to a man twice their age apropos of absolutely nothing. i don’t need this book to tell a tale about feminism and women at all, but if you have the protagonist frame it that way, and do not rebuke or deconstruct her stance, that’s something you must deliver on. 

this book teased multiple things and only succeeded at about half of them. thus, 3 stars.

note: all my ratings are subjective but this one especially so. my personal enjoyment pushed it to a four-ish, but in technical quality i think it settles around a 3.5.

i have my fair share of issues about this book, but everytime i wasn't reading it, i was thinking about reading it. i never had a bad moment with this book, despite many warning that it starts to hit it's stride 20% into it. i was invested from page one essentially. 

for my critiques, i'll say there is the issue with repetitive word choice, (there's only so many times i can read the word attractive) prose that definitely has it roots in YA despite being an adult book, and too much telling rather than showing in the romance. i think was written for zidan and remy, along with what has been set up for them is great, both individually and character wise. the same unfortunately cannot quite be said for xiaodan, who i feel got the short end of the stick. i know that she likes remy, and her fiance, i know several objective facts about her, but very little beyond that. that lack of interiority unfortunately spread to the relationship somewhat, leaving me fine with her interactions with her love interests, but never truly satisfied in the same way remy and malekh's do. however, this is the first book in what i presume to be a series, and that i expect that there will be more on xiaodan, especially with the events of the ending, a part of the book that really stood out for me. 

that's not to say i didn't enjoy the relationship, because i absolutely did. they were always engaging to have on page, and i don't have any specific complaints about them (aside from the issue with xiaodan above). more fantasy authors should include sex scenes in their books. 

plotwise, i had a fun time. i think this book would work excellent in a graphic novel or animation format because of how high-action it was. the rot plotline was a good opener for the series,

but i wasn't sad to read the offhanded mention of it being neutralized in the ending. it's a perfect book one plot, but i think i'd be annoyed seeing it be carried into book two, as all the threads and theories surrounding it were solved, or deliberately and explicitly shelved for the sequel.

the book achieved what it set out to accomplish and didn't overwhelm me with side-plots. the high-action makes the pacing seem faster than it was, but the plot unfolded at a steady medium pace that worked just right for the book in my opinion. 

i started dragging in the middle portion and it was due at the library. will definitely be returning to it though! 

fucking harrowing. i never know how to rate nonfiction, but this book pulled me in. there was a point when there was a mention of how unbearable the days grew as they passed, that i wondered just how long she’d be trapped in that place, and completely forgot it’s in the title. earlier i was so engrossed in the story and horrors nellie witnessed i was thrown off by the mention of it only being her first day. 

i didn’t get a chance to read the source material beforehand, and this isn’t my first time in aslyum related media, especially in the victorian era, but something about the combination of nellie bly’s storytelling, and the illustrations made this a stand out read for me.
