Strong characterization, especially in the main character, protected this novel from some of the lesser bits. Notably, the ending isn't really an ending at all but a way for the author to offer an academic soliloquy through a character whose strong voice and opinions have otherwise led the story. Even though I agree with the author's beliefs, I felt the ending tapered off to almost nothing after such an explosive final event.
