I listened to this book slowly mostly on my way to and from work over the course of a couple months. It was surprisingly funny and helped carry me far away to island time, if only for a brief while, and helped me decompress from stressful work days. I loved following Slocum's path around the globe and thinking about the challenges he faced in a pre-1900 world. Essential reading for all sons of sons of sailors.

One of my absolute favorite books. I can easily follow along his journey - he encounters many challenges, but faces most with a curiosity and self-assured knowledge that he will find a way

I see why this is a classic of the "solo sailor memoir" category. It is so well written, with a subtle sly understated sense of humor. The fact that he solo circumnavigated the world in the late 1890's is a bonus. His cultural observations are interesting. And as an old sailor who didn't make the transition to steam, he knew that he was on the edge of the old ways.

Note: Even in the 1890's, people complained about the increased automation and the lack of time to properly "visit" with people.

Barnes and Noble made all of their classic books only $5.00. I went a little crazy and picked up anything that looked remotely interesting. This was remotely interesting, but not great. The author had nothing truly remarkable to say about the world, sailing, or his trip. Had he not been the first to sail alone around the world, no one would have cared about this book. A healthy interest in sailing in the first place would be helpful as well if you are considering this book. If you are like me and have never been on a boat with a sail, long portions of the book will bore you. A classic in the sense that it is old, but not in the sense that it has much value 120 years after it was first published.

Very entertaining account of an incredibly different time, and an amazing sailor that really reflected that period. Interesting, at times fascinating and all in all a solid 4 star read. Enjoyed it!!!

Reading this helped me understand that the travelogue/memoir genre isn't for me. Thoreau gets a pass because he philosophizes throughout his journaling, but it's difficult to get through otherwise.
