recession then, recession now - this could've been written now

Social realist novel from the late Weimar period. Absolutely heartbreaking portrait of a young married couple trying to survive in the midst of the mass unemployment of the Great Depression. All too many echoes of the present day when it comes to the difficulties facing the young during economic hard times.

Lovely writing- never quite collapses into the Weimar-era downer it could easily be, but holds just enough happiness in the couple's company together to make the rest more devastating. Still, though: not for the seasonally affected...

Real solid. Liked the concurrence of hope and despair throughout, and the insidiousness of the rising Nazism lurking just far enough away to ignore if u wanted, but not so far away that u can rest easy that our young man won't join them.
