Very fast-paced & suspenseful, but I was a little disappointed with the rushed ending that lacked the detail I was hoping for.

2nd reading - April 2022
This was the first book I read in the Grant County/Sara/Will series and it was a testament to Slaughter's expertise that I thoroughly enjoyed it without the benefit of the background stories. But now, because I'm reading the two series in order, I wanted to re-read it. It was definitely nice to fit it into the context of their relationship, etc and I'm glad I re-read it. My original review stands. It's gripping, suspenseful, and overall excellent. And nightmarish.
-------------
Just excellent. Fast-paced, suspenseful, and a scary predictor of the events at the US capitol last month.
I haven't read any other of the Will Trent series, but my friend Susan recommended this and said I could read it as a stand-alone. That is absolutely the case, although I'm interested in reading the earlier books to learn more about the characters.
In terms of darkness, this skirts the edge of my comfort zone. I think the excellent writing helps.

An amazing addition to the series!
It felt different than the previous books. While the previous ones had much more gore and graphic scenes, great to show violence but allow you to convince yourself it's not happening in reality, this one has a strand of violence much more compatible with what we're used to see, and so it's almost worse because you know it could happen.
Anyway, great book, read it almost in a single sitting, Karin keeps on delivering

A part of a series that I haven't read. But the main character's are very likeable. The man, will, is an agent with GBI, the woman, Sara is a medical examiner for GBI. This book they are living together. They respond to a blast and get caught up in a car accident. The men kidnap Sara because she is a doctor. It becomes evident that they were the cause of the blast. They take her to a remote commune where they reveal that they are planning an attack to show the world the true ways. They are racist, homophobic and masogonistic. The leader is dash and he has sara help tend to his children who have measles. Meanwhile will, and his partner faith are working hard to find out about this cult. They discover they are a pedophiles and that the wife of dash is the daughter of a captured criminal. They learn that they had captured Michelle, a CDC scientist who also worked with botulism. The cult has tainted their bullets with botulism as well as airplane food containers. Will goes undercover and infiltrates the group. He goes in the big mission and shoots but doesn't kill dash. Sara is left at the commune but everyone else is poisoned. She warns faith about the plan. At the end sara asks will to move in and he suggests they get married. Good story very meta.

Ordinarily, I love a good Will Trent novel but this one was a slog to get through :-(
Never really felt like I found the true plot. Everything seemed tangential to some point that I never got. Maybe i just was too distracted with other things but I just did NOT enjoy this one.
